Even at this late date, one does want to be careful and as accurate as possible in describing the D. Trump affair in American politics this year. So whether Trump is actually mentally deranged must, as Hillary Clinton said, be left to the psychologists.
But I think if a person is what is often called abusive, we can speak of enablers without having to call our local Dr. Freud.
Such is the case with one Donald J. Trump, lately of Taj Mahal fame (the Atlantic kind, not the Indian kind). Something like abuse has gone on in the Republican primary process. With the name-calling, the scapegoating, and even the Stockholm syndrome, Trump has abused us all in a certain way.
But the real scandal are the fellow travelers and journalists and others of power who made Trump into a famous, if not credible, candidate for President. How else would someone with so much baggage, so much hubris, come within a stone's throw of the White House?
I have neither the time nor the inclination to delineate all that has been in this weird and scary election season, a season whose unpredictability, uncouthness, and general outrageousness have never been exceeded. And it's all been televised and tweeted and snapped and "Facebooked."
None of this would have happened without a compliant, even eager, press and media whose open door policy on Trump is unprecedented.
