For those so inclined, the book of Amos contains much that rings true today. His warnings to the northern kingdom of Israel, chastising them for economic, moral, and social injustice, can be applied to much of what we see around us today, no matter the country we live in. For surely we do have these same kinds of problems. In spite of all our technological developments the basic human situation continues. How do we deal with economic disparity, especially when it is supported by government as in the West and other places today?
Amos' warning is that Israel will be taken captive, her nation and society destroyed. What would Amos say of our times now? Would he be full of congratulations for our self-glorying, our economic disparities, our missiles of destruction, and violent social divisions? Or would he be full of righteous indignation, warning us of the severe penalty to be paid for such a way of life?
