A web log based on the principle that a civilized society deserves democratic government based on integrity. The premise here is the U.S. democracy has effectively been subverted by oligarchical forces which must be opposed with facts and rational thought. (An RSS feed is recommended.)

America's Ugly Anti-Communist Legacy

In the late 1940's and early 1950's there arose in America a witch-hunt searching for "un-American" Communist activities.  This movement came to be known as McCarthyism after the Senator who so voraciously pursued the alleged miscreants.

Incredibly, ministers and even entire church programs were accused of Communist activities.  The article -- from another American country (Canada) -- gives some of the details of these accusations.  One can hear the pain on the part of accused ministers.

Was America really over-run by Communists in churches around 1950?  The idea is preposterous on its face.  And yet there were powerful men in Congress who believed such lies.  The harm done by these false accusations can hardly be over-estimated.  The story of the accused has not been told yet today.

The desire to find witches, spies, and other supposed ne'er-do-wells despised by one's own suspicious nature is present with us yet today.  Today we would call such suspects, "radical Islamists."  Fortunately, the mud-slingers have yet to say the churches in America are over-run with radical Islamists.  This, however, is small comfort to law-abiding Islamists or anyone who supposedly looks like one.

600 Ministers Communist?
