The so-called Commission on Presidential Debates is being besieged by groups who say the entity effectively excludes third-party candidates from the quadrennial debates sometimes called joint press conferences. The last time an independent or third-party candidate participated in any of these nationally-televised debates was in 1992 when Ross Perot shared the stage with George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Mr. Perot was not invited in 1996.
The effort of the critics seeks to prevent a large number of alternate candidates while still including at least one independent candidate. Former officials from both major parties are involved in the campaign.
