Web Log Purpose

A web log based on the principle that a civilized society deserves democratic government based on integrity. The premise here is the U.S. democracy has effectively been subverted by oligarchical forces which must be opposed with facts and rational thought. (An RSS feed is recommended.)

Window of Opportunity for Alternative To Trump Appears to Be Closing: But Is it?

I have been advocating for almost two weeks that Trump's candidacy must not be normalized.  The media has been working very hard to do just that -- make an outrageous, misogynistic, ignorant, xenophobic, opportunistic businessman with many failures -- seem like an acceptable, viable candidate.  Why are they doing this?

For one thing, it seems as though many of the persons writing are quite young.  I read no references, for instance, to today's Germans reacting to Trump in horror, comparing him to Hitler.  There seem to be no qualms whatever in articles referred to on MSN's news page to Trump's wildly shifting positions on the issues.

Worse is the locked-in thinking shown by many in the media.  They see Trump -- and even Clinton, who has lost several recent primaries by large margins -- as having the nominations "locked up."

Why am I making a point of this?  First, and primarily because of the facts.  The Washington Post in last Sunday's edition did a much better job than I can do here of detailing all Trump's various problems as a candidate -- his moral lapses, his swiftly changing positions, his loose talk about violence.  These are not minor problems.  Any one area would be problematic.  Added together they represent a profound failure in the Republican Party system to produce a credible candidate.

With a candidate like this, the utmost in brainstorming should be encouraged.  A few media outlets are engaging in this.  Again, The Post comes to mind.  I certainly have my differences with The Post, but at least they are reporting the news:  that there continue to be organized efforts to find a candidate to oppose Trump.  They are also printing news of the problems with such an effort as well as numerous quotes from the naysayers.

The quotes I like the best are those from political observers who say this is a very strange year, that anything, or almost anything, can happen.  These observers are much closer to the truth than those who merely say the two candidates (and only two, of course) have already been decided.

In summation, Trump as a candidate under any circumstances is simply unacceptable in this democracy.  If a Trump can be considered legitimate, this country has indeed declined to an appallingly low state, so low it isn't even worth saving.  I simply don't think this is true -- yet.

There is still time to oppose Trump.   But we must be about the business and fast.
